Thick cables carry electric current from power stations. Some of this cables are below the ground. Pylons or metal pillars to support these cables when they are to be carried overhead. A system of cables and pylons link all the power stations in the country to a big network known as the grid.
The picture below shows how the network carries electricity to your town. The cables carry plenty of electric power. For power to be safely used it has to be decreased or 'transformed' at substations. Demand for power may vary from place place and this is why the network allows it to be diverted from areas of low demand to areas with higher demand. If the electric supply fails from one power station, it is sent along the same cables in the grid, from another power station. Thus the electric power supply remains un-interrupted in that area. Let us understand how wiring is done in a home. When electricity reaches the house, it arrives through a wire. It enters the fuse box where it is devided into two types of circuits. The first is for operating lights, fans and appliance that consume less electrycity. The second type of circuit supplies electrycity to the sockets where we connect appliance, like ovens and air conditioners, that consume high electricity. Both the type of circuit are plotted all over the house.
The first type of circuit may have thinner wires while the second type would have thicker wires. Normally the wires cannot be seen because they lie within walls or the roof. When electrical appliance have to be used we may plug them into these sockets, to link them to the circuit. we use electricity in homes in various ways. It is utilised to light up our homes, for cooking on stoves and in ovens, for our entertainment when we watch television and videos and also when we would like to use our home P.C. These are just some of the ways we use electricity at home. Within the home, two kinds of circuits namely the lighting circuit and the socket are supplied with electricity. When a plug is fitted into a socket, we may connect an electrical gadget to the power supply.
