How to Become a Career Counselor

Career counselor help the people for a job search by preparing a resume, job applications and interview preparations. They also help in case of job loss, job transition, and any kind of stress in this field. I think, to become a career counselor must have to a genuine desire to help others people. Good writing skills,  good listening skills, communication skills, computer knowledge are immensely important. Also they must be able to inspire the job seekers. Computer and client management skills are also necessary. Qualification required to become a career counselor vary from place to place. Different areas or different place may have different requirements. But simply, career counselor must have a degree in counseling or degree in physiology from any reputed university. This degree helps them. It also helps to have certifications from the International Coach Federation ( ICF ). Some field experience may be required apply to this job. There are many way to success in this field. Some steps are given below.

Steps 1: Acquire an undergraduate degree: Firstly acquire an undergraduate degree in physiology or counseling, according to your teacher or counselor. Because only they know what will be better. This degree prepare the students for counseling. specially degree in physiology also helps the student to work with clients. If you choose an undergraduate degree in physiology then you do not need to career counseling degree. But bear in mind that your school or university will be certified by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs ( CACREP ).

Steps 2: Acquire a masters degree with internship: Master degree is also required to become a career counselor. It helps the students to build a career. Masters degree program focuses on find techniques, career development, research with human. With this degree students learn how to evaluate and manage the client. On the other hand internship is equally necessary as well as undergraduate and master's degree.

Steps 3: Apply for license: After completing your study, you can apply for license in your own state. It's essential for starting your career. State boards for counselor may require the candidates pass a state examination. If you have some knowledge about counseling, client management and career development then you will pass the exam. But some states require work experience.

Steps 4: Start a private practice: After taking license you can start your practice. You can start as an independent practitioner or you can join an organization such as National Career Association ( NCA ) or something like that.
